Spellgems are small gem- like objects that contain magical energy in the form of spells, with each spellgem carrying one spell. They are usually found in the same buildings as books. They come in various colors, have a weight of 1, and can hold up to 5 charges. To those without the Spellcraft skill, they appear as small colored gems, while those with it can see the name of the spell encased within. Only characters who can Sense Magic can see how many charges of the spell are contained in the gem. Gems are fragile, and if the number of charges falls to 0 through casting then the spell fades from the gem, which dissolves into nothingness. Only Sorcerers with the Pattern Weaver skill are skilled enough to prevent this. Characters with Spellcraft can use CP to commit the spell to memory. This will always consume the gem, no matter how many charges it has.

Charging

If the character possessing a Spellgem has learned the spell encoded in the gem (or knows any of its variant spells) and the gem has fewer than 5 charges, the Spellgem can be recharged. Recharging costs 3 Action Points and a number of Magic Points equal to twice the casting cost of the spell encoded in the gem. Each recharge action will add 1 charge to the Spellgem, up to the maximum of 5 charges.

Firing

Spells are triggered from within the Spellgem. If the character does not know the spell woven into the Spellgem, the casting cost is the normal cost for the spell. If the character has learned the spell woven into the Spellgem (or knows any of its variant spells) they will be more efficient in releasing the the spell, and the casting cost is reduced to 1 Magic Point. If the spell is a combat spell, the caster will also receive a one-point damage bonus for every spell of the same element of the spell that the caster knows.

Creating

Sorcerers with the Pattern Weaver skill are able to re- weave Spellgems. They can copy new variants of spells into a Spellgem. In this way, it is possible for new, player- created (but approved by game administrators) spells to enter the game and propagate. Of course, characters are free to keep their creations to themselves if they so choose.

Finding

Spellgems are found in different colors in different locations. The color of the gem defines what type of spell it holds. Here is a list of the currently known types of spellgems, what they do and where they are to be found. The individual spell find weights are found in the Offensive Spells Comparison Table.

Findrates are for one type of colored gem only, so if you don't care about the color, multiply by possible colors.

More findtables are in the proper spellgems' sections as not all gems are found equally everywhere.

Black Spellgem

These spellgems have a 70% chance to contain spells that deal Acid damage, although they sometimes contain another spell instead.

Blue Spellgem

These spellgems have a 70% chance to contain Glyph Spells, although they sometimes contain another spell instead.

Brown Spellgem

These spellgems have a 70% chance to contain spells that deal Impact damage, although they sometimes contain another spell instead.

Green Spellgem

These spellgems have a 70% chance to contain spells that deal Death damage, although they sometimes contain another spell instead.

Opalescent Spellgem

These spellgems can contain any spell.

Orange Spellgem

These spellgems have a 70% chance to contain spells that buff your character's abilites in various ways: Conjure Sinews, Guided Blade, Reveal, Seeking Hand and Sharp Vision, although they sometimes contain another spell instead.

Purple Spellgem

These spellgems have a 70% chance to contain spells that serve utility purposes: Shadow Wrap, Mystic Mail, Water Breathing, Mystic Shield and Blur, although they sometimes contain another spell instead.
