Decay

Any item which has a quality attribute is subject to Decay. Each time the item decays, it loses one level of quality (Pristine items become Good, Average items become Worn, etc.). If an item which is already of Destroyed quality decays, it will be removed from the owner's inventory and irrevocably lost.

Item qualities are:

  • Pristine - The item is of extraordinary quality. With weapons, this grants a bonus of +10% to attacks made with that weapon. With armor, this translates to a bonus of +2 to the soak value for each damage type for which the armor has a base soak value of at least 1.
  • Good - The item is of above-average quality. With weapons, this translates to an additional +5% to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a bonus of +1 to the soak quality of the armor.
  • Average - The item provides no bonuses or penalties.
  • Worn - The item is of below-average quality. With weapons, this translates to a -5% penalty to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a penalty of -1 to the soak quality of the armor, to a minimum of 0.
  • Broken - The item is of near-unusable quality. With weapons, this translates to a -15% penalty to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a penalty of -2 to the soak quality of the armor, to a minimum of 0.
  • Destroyed - The item is damaged almost beyond usability. With weapons, this translates to a -30% penalty to attacks made with the weapon. With armor, this translates to a penalty of -3 to the soak quality of the armor, to a minimum of 0.

The bonus (or penalty) to armor Soak granted by item quality includes soak that exists as a result of Enchantment. A Pristine suit of armor with ten points of Unholy enchantment will soak 12 points of Unholy damage. The same suit of armor at average quality will soak 10 points of unholy damage, or 8 points of unholy damage at broken quality.

Each time a weapon (other than Improvised Weapons) is used (even on a miss), there is a 3% chance that it will decay. If a piece of Armor is equipped, then there is a 4% chance for it to decay each time the wearer is attacked by a character and a 2% chance when attacked by a pet. Furthermore, each time a character dies, every item with a quality level in the character's inventory has a 12% chance to decay.

Various skills affect the rate of item decay. The skill Hold Bladed Edge prevents Melee weapons from decaying on use (but not on death), while the Parry skill increases the decay rate of weapons used against the character. The Pariah skill Destructive Blow automatically causes any armor the target has equipped to decay whenever it successfully hits.

Repair Item allows a character to repair items (hence the name) to average quality, provided the character has access to the right equipment or location - a Portable Toolkit to repair bows, a Factory/Smithy/Foundry for armour and blades, and a Gunbench for firearms. The Master crafter skills allow a character in the same conditions to improve items to pristine.

Innate Weapons and innate armor are not items, and so do not decay.
