Morality

Morality (often abbreviated as "MO") is the measurement of the goodness or evilness of a character. There are three shades of Morality: Good (white), Neutral (grey), and Evil (black). Characters will always know their own moral standing, but only those with Sense Morality can detect the moral standing of another character.

All characters begin with a Morality of 0, but after that, almost every action a character can take in Nexus Clash will affect their Morality in some way. Some actions will affect a character's Morality differently depending on whether that character is Good, Neutral, or Evil. For example, attacking or killing an Evil character is considered a good act if the aggressor is Good or Neutral, but it is considered an evil act if the aggressor is Evil. Some actions, like picking a lock, do not affect a character's Morality.

Different Classes assign different levels of importance to Morality and have access to differing range of Morality:

  • Angels, including the Redeemed, draw their power from their virtue and so must maintain Good Morality, and will lose access to all but their Mortal skills should they fail to do so. However, they are allowed access to greater heights of Goodness than other characters and may have morality between a maximum of 50 and a minimum of -30.
  • Demons, including the Fallen, draw their power from their wickedness and so must have Evil Morality at all times lest they lose access to all but their Mortal skills. To assist in their unending fall, they have been granted access to greater depths of Evil and so may have morality between a maximum of 30 and a minimum of -50.
  • Transcended characters, like Mortals, are free from moral obligation, as they have the gift of free will that allows them to choose whatever Morality they wish to have. They may have morality between a maximum of 40 and a minimum of -40.

A character can only shift morality in their own Stronghold if the shift in morality is in tune with the Faction's alignment. To wit, it is not possible to raise one's morality in an Evil stronghold, nor to lower it in a Good stronghold, while Unaligned strongholds only permit morality shifts toward zero. The only exception to this rule is if the character attacks a member of their own faction.

Take heed when reclaiming a character, as their Morality score is not reset to 0 between breaths. This may prove quite the challenge when attempting to make a Good character into an Evil character or vice-versa.

Good Morality

Characters with a Morality score of 50 to 20 are considered to be Good. Good characters tend to believe in cooperation, teamwork, and harmony. This can usually be reached by attacking and killing Evil targets (but see Evil Morality below), healing other non-demon players (even if the target happens to be Evil), and doing general tasks that aid many players in the long run (such as repairing power to improve Search odds). Characters with Good Morality have the option to Ascend into one of the angelic character classes when they reach 10th level, or Transcend into one of the transcendent character classes.

Neutral Morality

Characters with a Morality score of 19 to -19 are considered to be Neutral. Neutral characters tend to believe in the supremacy of free will and the right to choose and take whatever action they so desire. Of course, the truth may well be that they are doing 'too good' to be Evil and 'too Evil' to be Good at that moment. Or, they may simply not have done enough in either 'direction' to be noteworthy. Characters with Neutral Morality at 10th level may only Transcend into one of the transcendent character classes -- they may not become angels nor demons.

Characters in Unaligned Factions will always gain and lose morality as if they were of Neutral Morality, regardless of their actual moral alignment.

Evil Morality

Characters with a Morality score of -20 to -50 are considered to be Evil. Evil characters tend to believe in power for power's sake, destruction, and their own needs before all others'. Rising out of this Morality by normal combat alone is impossible - more penitent, menial (deliberate) community actions are required such as healing and repairing to ever reach Neutral again. Characters with Evil Morality may Descend into one of the demonic character classes upon reaching 10th level. Evil characters also have the option of Transcending into one of the transcendent character classes.

Table of Morality

This table has a list of actions that characters can take and the resulting Morality shift from performing such actions.

Take heed, for some skills (such as Plague of Doubt) and other things (such being inside a Stronghold) can influence this Morality shift.
